The oldest in Cilento, the first edition of Pioppi’s blue fish festival dates back to 1969, at the end of an important international medical cardiology congress held at Palazzo Vinciprova. On that occasion, the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet were highlighted, and it was noted how regular consumption of blue fish and extra virgin olive oil positively influences human health and well-being. From there came the idea to enhance the product and carry forward the fishermen’s tradition. A tradition that continues today through one of the most anticipated events of the rich Cilento summer. The festival is organized by the Pioppi Pro Loco. The blue fish festival finds its origin in an ancient habit of Pioppi fishermen who, returning early in the morning from fishing, hung their cotton nets to dry on the beach and in the meantime treated themselves to a breakfast of raw marinated anchovies, oil, and crispbread. To evoke that morning ritual, the event still takes place by the sea today.
